An hour later, Maggie, Aksel and I approached The Old Mariner’s Hotel.

Aksel grinned. “Jealous?”

I glared at him in response. “Couldn’t be further from the truth. I think it’s a bad idea because it’s not going to work. She’s not going to want to randomly have a drink with you. It’s just not going to happen.”

Aksel’s eyes twinkled with amusement in the evening light; he was actually enjoying this. “Oh, I think you’ll find I can be persuasive when I want to be.”

I rolled my eyes at him. “Right. It’s such a man thing to think you’re going to be so charming, you can convince her to chat with you for a while.”

“Given as the alternative is letting you get caught committing a robbery in the course of investigating a murder, I’d say the stakes are high enough that I’d better put every ounce of charm I have into this.”

“That’s what I’m afraid of,” I muttered.

“If the two of you are done flirting-” Maggie started, but before she was able to continue, Aksel and I interrupted in unison.

“We are not flirting.”

Maggie rolled her eyes. “Or whatever you kids are calling it these days. Regardless, cut it out. We’re here.”

The Old Mariner’s Hotel was located in the central part of town, right across from the main beach on the bay, protected from the wild Celtic Sea beyond. The three-story stone building stood gray and imposing; it had obviously been here for centuries. Orange and green moss dotted the stones that faced the water, and the lower level had been covered in stucco and painted white at some point, giving it a fresh look. Above the cornflower-blue door was a gold sign that read “The Old Mariner’s Hotel”, along with an anchor tilted on its side.

A small enclosed patio offered restaurant patrons a view over the beach. With it coming into peak season and the weather being beautiful, every table was taken with patrons enjoying a nice pint of beer as they watched the sun slowly meander toward the horizon.

Maggie paused in front of the door and took me by the arm. “He goes in first,” she ordered. “We’ll wait a couple of minutes.”

“Good luck,” I said to Aksel, trying to keep any sarcasm from my voice.

“Don’t need it, but thanks,” he replied, shooting me a wink. “Take your time looking for any evidence. I’ve got this.”

Maggie and I watched as Aksel walked into the hotel, and I grumbled, “He’s so arrogant.”

“He’s the right person for this, though,” Maggie pointed out. “You seem to refuse to see it, but he can turn on the charm when he wants to.”

“That’s because he thinks flashing that smile is enough to make any woman swoon in front of him. Well, guess what? It’s the twenty-first century, and that’s not enough anymore. He has to offer more than just a pretty face.”

“I think you’d be surprised,” Maggie replied.

“Probably,” I grumbled. “But I for one am not falling for it.”

“All right,” Maggie said. “Well, let’s go in and see if Danielle has, at the very least.
